Pyramid Solitaire Strategy: How to Win More Deals
Pyramid Solitaire hands you one rule — remove pairs that add to 13 — and hides a genuinely strategic game behind it. Unlike Klondike, where patience usually finds a way, Pyramid punishes greedy pairing immediately: spend the wrong 6 and the 7 it should have freed dies under a locked flank. Here's how strong players think, testable any time on our free Pyramid Solitaire.
Know the pairs cold
A+Q, 2+J, 3+10, 4+9, 5+8, 6+7 — and Kings alone. That's the whole vocabulary. If you still compute "what pairs with 8?" mid-game, drill this list first; every technique below assumes it's automatic.
1. Read the pyramid before your first move
Each rank has exactly four copies in the deck. Before you touch anything, find the four copies of the ranks your bottom rows depend on. The killer layout to spot: both remaining copies of a rank buried directly beneath the cards they need to free. If both 5s sit under both 8s, that pairing lane is dead before you start — plan a route that doesn't need it.
2. Pyramid pairs beat waste pairs
Removing two pyramid cards uncovers up to two new cards; pairing a pyramid card with the waste uncovers at most one; pairing inside the stock uncovers nothing. When several pairs are available, take them in that order of preference — unless the greedy pair spends a card the pyramid still needs (see rule 1). The question is never "can I pair?" but "what does this pair unlock?"
3. Dig evenly
A lopsided excavation locks its own middle: cards in the center row need both cards below them gone, so a tall untouched flank freezes half the board. Alternate sides and keep the frontier level — the same principle as keeping both flanks moving in Mahjong Solitaire.
4. Spend low cards late
Aces and 2s pair with Queens and Jacks — heavyweights that mostly surface from the stock late in the game. Burning an Ace early on a Queen you didn't need to clear leaves the last Queen unpairable at the worst moment. Hold small cards until the big partner actually blocks something.
5. Manage the stock like a resource
The stock passes through your hands three times at most (two redeals in our version). On the first pass, be picky — take only pairs that dig. On the last pass, take everything legal: there is no later. Count roughly how many stock cards remain versus how many pyramid cards still need stock partners; when those numbers get close, stop saving and start spending.
6. Kings are free — play them instantly
A King clears alone and helps nobody else. The only reason to delay tapping one is literally never. Clear it the moment it opens; it's pure tempo.
Accept that some deals are dead
Even perfect play can't clear every Pyramid deal — the four-copies budget sometimes makes a layout mathematically impossible. That's the genre, not your fault. Use unlimited undo to explore lines (it's information, not cheating), and treat a consistent clear rate above roughly a quarter of deals as strong play.
